Preliminary Alternatives

As part of Phase 1 of the West Lake Corridor New Start Studies, potential build Alternatives were developed based on results from previous studies including the West Lake County Corridor Major Investment Study – December 2000.  Consideration was given to the goals and objectives developed in the Purpose and Need document as well as to the physical conditions and transportation opportunities within the study area.  The proposed alternatives consist of commuter rail and express bus investments.  Click on Alternatives below for a brief description:

Alternative 1 – Commuter Rail from Valparaiso and Lowell to Downtown Chicago

Alternative 2 – Commuter Rail from Valparaiso to Downtown Chicago

Alternative 3 – Commute Rail from Lowell to Downtown Chicago

Alternative 4 – Regional Express Bus

Additionally, as the study progresses, a Baseline Alternative will be developed in cooperation with the Federal Transit Administration.  The Baseline Alternative is a set of low cost investments intended to improve the operation of the existing transportation system without constructing major new facilities.   This alternative will be used to isolate the specific benefits of the selected build alternative, which is referred to as the locally preferred alternative (LPA).

The evaluation of the alternatives will commence at the conclusion of ridership and cost estimation activities.
